Adult Orthodontics

Orthodontic care is no longer only for children. Many adults are finding it increasingly important to address the alignment and functional fit of their teeth to preserve the long-term health of their dentition. In many instances, adults may be referred by their family dentist, periodontist or oral surgeon for an evaluation with the orthodontist as a part of a comprehensive dental treatment plan. This interdisciplinary (multi-specialty) approach to treatment planning dental care is critical to facilitate placement of restorations, implants, gingival (gum) health and facial esthetics.

As adults have become increasingly interested in pursuing orthodontic treatment as an adjunct to their regular dental care many options have been developed to make wearing orthodontic appliances easier for adults. Limited treatment refers to wearing braces in only one area of the mouth to align specific teeth for esthetic concerns or prior to placement of final restorations by the family dentist.

Invisalign

Invisalign is an alternative to wearing metal or clear braces for adult (non-growing) patients. This treatment approach involves using a series of clear “aligners” to move teeth into proper position. Our doctors use specially designed 3-D computer imaging software to custom design your “virtual treatment plan”. The aligners are formed once treatment planning is complete and delivered by our doctors at your regular appointments. This appliance is especially designed for patients who would never have considered placing braces on their teeth. Our doctors will be happy to show you this exciting appliance and discuss the options available to you for orthodontic care at your initial consultation. For additional information about this new technology, you may visit the Invisalign (www.invisalign.com) website.
