Elastics (Rubber Bands)
You may be asked at times throughout your orthodontic care to wear elastics (rubber bands). Elastics are attached to your braces and exert light forces to move teeth. In order for the teeth to move, a light, continuous force is required. It is therefore critical that you wear the elastics all the time (or as directed by the doctor) and change them at least 3 times daily in order to complete your orthodontic care on schedule. Any time missed wearing elastics may lengthen your orthodontic treatment.
Some helpful things to remember about elastics (rubber bands):
- You are responsible for wearing the elastics as instructed.
- Remove your elastics for brushing and flossing, then replace them immediately.
- Change your rubber bands at least 3 times daily (Meal time is a good time to change them) as elastics lose their strength over time.
- If you forget to wear your elastics one day do not double up the next day. Simply continue to wear the elastics as directed.
- Always carry extra rubber bands with you so you may change them as needed.
- If you are unsure of the direction to place your elastics refer to the diagram you were given at your appointment or call our office so we can instruct you on the correct placement of the elastics.
- If your elastics break frequently, a wire or band loosens, or hook breaks call our office immediately. We need to correct these problems for you so that you can be comfortable and your orthodontic care can continue on schedule.
